Social engineering;
This session not only raised everyone’s awareness of telecommunication network fraud prevention, but also helped participants understand how to better protect their personal information and property security.
In modern society, the leakage of personal information and network fraud has become an increasingly serious problem. In order to help everyone better protect their privacy and property security, Mr. Peng gave some practical advice and tips:
How to Prevent Personal Information Leakage
Be cautious about sharing personal information: On social media and online platforms, avoid publicly sharing sensitive information such as your ID number, home address, phone number, and birthday. When filling out online forms or registering accounts, try to minimize the provision of unnecessary personal information.
Use strong passwords: Create complex and unique passwords, including uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Use different passwords for different accounts to avoid reusing passwords. Regularly change passwords and use password management tools to save and manage passwords.
Enable two-factor authentication: Enable two-factor authentication for important accounts (such as bank accounts, email, social media accounts, etc.) to add an extra layer of security. Two-factor authentication usually requires a one-time verification code obtained via SMS, email, or authentication app after entering the password.
Pay attention to public Wi-Fi security: Avoid sensitive operations on public Wi-Fi networks, such as online shopping, bank transactions, etc. Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your network connection and protect your data security.
Beware of phishing: Be vigilant about unfamiliar emails, text messages, or calls, especially those that ask for personal information. Do not click on suspicious links, do not download unknown attachments, and confirm the sender’s identity before operating. Do not answer unfamiliar calls: Do not answer YES/NO questions."
2. Information Security Tips
Install security software: Install reliable antivirus software and firewalls on your computer and mobile phone, and keep them updated. Use anti-spyware software to scan and remove malicious software.
Regularly backup data: Regularly backup important files and data to an external hard drive or cloud storage to prevent data loss. Use encryption technology to protect the security of backup data.
Update software and systems: Regularly update operating systems, browsers, and applications to patch known security vulnerabilities. Enable automatic updates to ensure that you get the latest security patches as soon as possible.
Set privacy permissions: Check and adjust the privacy permissions of applications and devices to ensure that only necessary permissions are granted. Turn off the WeChat group add function. Turn off unnecessary location services and camera access permissions.
Practical Advice for Protecting Privacy and Property Security
Monitor bank accounts and credit reports: Regularly check bank accounts and credit card bills, discover and report suspicious transactions in time. Obtain a free credit report every year to see if there are any unauthorized accounts or loans.
Use encrypted communication tools: Use encrypted email services and encrypted chat applications to ensure that communication content is not eavesdropped on. Encrypt sensitive files stored on the device to prevent data leakage.
Protect personal devices: Set boot passwords or biometric protection (such as fingerprints, facial recognition) for mobile phones, tablets, and computers. Enable device loss positioning and remote erase functions to prevent data leakage after the device is lost.
Education and awareness improvement: Continue to participate in the ‘Preventing Telecommunication Network Fraud’ series of lectures by the Shaanxi Association of Canada, understand common network fraud methods, and improve prevention awareness. Promote information security knowledge to family and friends, and improve security prevention capabilities together.
Prevent Telecommunication Fraud Remember the ‘Five Musts and Five Must Nots’ Mnemonic
Be vigilant about strange calls, don’t be careless
Verify network information, don’t be gullible
Be cautious about suspicious links, don’t click randomly
Verify fund transfers, don’t rush
Report to the police once you are defrauded, don’t hesitate
Through these measures, you can better protect personal information, prevent information leakage, and ensure privacy and property security. Remember, information security is not just a technical issue, but also a good habit in life. I hope everyone can learn more practical knowledge through this lecture and improve their information security awareness.

In the end, the first prize was won by the lucky Ms. Li, with a prize of $30; the second prize was won by Mr. Zhang and Miss Wang, each winning $20; the third prize was shared by three lucky participants, each winning $10.
